Why do I want to be Moderator?

The position of Moderator of the Unitarian Universalist Association embodies our theology of shared ministry and provides critical linkages and leadership in our complex national leadership structure.  I believe that shared ministry, strong faith-filled and faithful lay leadership, and healthy institutional structures are vital components to grow and support thriving congregations and a vibrant, compelling faith movement.  I want to serve as Moderator to live out and model strong, faithful, compassionate, shared ministry in ways that strengthen others’ call to serve, enhance others‘ capacity to serve with integrity and skill, and enliven our sense of common and faithful purpose.
My service to Unitarian Universalism has provided me with experience with youth empowerment and leadership, congregational leadership, ARAOMC and some of the marginalized communities to which our efforts are accountable, ministerial formation and settlement, funding and endowments, UUA bylaws and policies, and governance.  My leadership positions have brought me to our theological schools, UU churches and districts across the United States.  General Assembly is a familiar forum to me.  I have attended almost every General Assembly since the early 1990, often presenting in plenary, workshops and worship.
My educational and professional experience has supported and enhanced my understanding and knowledge of systems, organizational behavior, and the dynamics of oppression.  My years of consulting taught me to be intentional about my own role, aware of boundaries, careful of the integrity of the existing systems, and strategic in influencing meaningful change.  I manage conflict well, having often been sole facilitator of highly charged discussions around oppression, power and change.
Our current UUA governance structure has undergone significant change and upheaval in the past half of a decade.  These changes require a Moderator who can listen, learn, adjust, laugh, pray and lead in a shifting, morphing system.  These changes also represent relationship, power and identity shifts within our faith community.  There is an important ministry to be done in the recalibrating, reworking and renewing of these relationship roles.
I am honored, excited and humbled to be considered for the position of UUA Moderator.
